What Does 10 Karat Gold Mean? Learn About Gold Purity.

by Chris on March 4, 2010

Gold purity is expressed in karat or fineness measurements.  Karat measurement is mostly used in USA and Canada and fineness measurements are used mostly in Europe.

The short form of karat that you will see on jewelry and other gold item is the symbol “kt”.

Karat(kt) measurement goes way back to the roman times and is measures on a scale of 24.  Therefore if you have 24kt gold you would have pure gold.

Fineness measurements are based on a percentage value of the purity.  Since karat has been around for such a long time the fineness measurements will always relate back to a karat number.  For example you would be hard pressed to find a fineness value of 500.

Below are most common karat and finesses values:

  • 24 karat gold (fineness 999)
  • 22 karat gold (fineness 916)
  • 20 karat gold (fineness 833)
  • 18 karat gold (fineness 750)
  • 15 karat gold (fineness 625)
  • 14 karat gold (fineness 585)
  • 10 karat gold (fineness 417)
  • 9 karat gold (fineness 375)
  • 8 karat gold (fineness 333)
